WoW. Midnight?

The Warcraft Midnight expansion is finally here, and I actually found some time to play! But was it worth all the hype?

After the months and months and months of Midnight talk, spec changes, patches and everything else that came with the new expansion, it kinda crept in and then just appeared without much of any flash.

I in fact accidentally started the Midnight content by mistake. I had thought official release was on Tuesday, but it was actually Monday with “early” access 4 days prior. (if you paid a wad of money you got to start early). I clicked on what I thought was one of the many seasonal event questgivers that were there at the time and Whoosh, off to Eversong.

No queued logins, no throngs of players gathered around questgivers, no fighting for quest mobs.. just a casual ordinary day.

It was great being back in these old locations that a lot of us spent loads of time with back in the day. Things felt new, but familiar. Everything seems to be just as we left it a few decades ago.

Except…..

Silvermoon City.

Even back in the day I used to get lost in there. It was big and wandering with streets and paths leading anywhere.

Today it is 100x as big, 100x as confusing, 100% of every corner and building looking exactly alike. It looks great, but dude, put some descriptions on the map!

So I dunno what I was really expecting storywise in Midnight, but I have been questing in the city and its outskirts fairly hard now for 4-5 days, and I think only about 2% of it had anything to do with what I’d consider “main story”. It sure does feel like classic Eversong quests.. Kill these mana worms, kill those mana worms, Magisters, brooms…. but lets get moving here.

Am literally 3+ out of 10 levels in and not seen even the slightest bit plot movement. I have not yet come across the Prey mechanic. The new feature where you are “hunted” by NPCs out in the wild. I figured there would be a quest or something leading into it, but I guess I will have to look up a guide or something. I don’t think you should have to do that for a touted feature, but..

In fact, since I have been in Midnight, I haven’t really done or seen anything Midnighty at all. It all just is multitudes of side quests that are giving exp for sure, but no substance.

A week in now, and I am already turning to fishing to waste time. Maybe I should turn down my questing addon to just follow mainline quests? Get through the zones now, and go back for side quests later? Riiiight. If I skip passed them now, I aint ever going back.

I heard players talking about nailing 90 before they finished the main questline.. I’m almost 84 and I haven’t seen a new zone yet!

I queued for a dungeon just to see how those were. After being out only a week, groups are already speed running. And both dungeons I did seem to have those cheesy mechanics sections. Ones where you gotta do dumb stuff like dance on stage or feed customers drinks… c’mon…. really?

So far I am extremely unimpressed with the inner workings of Midnight. And that might be entirely my fault for doing more side quests than main quests. But why would it be my fault for doing content?

But I guess I’ll change that setting to see if I can get back on story, otherwise Midnight might be a shorter stay than normal.
