I saw this title sitting in the “#2 in movies today” slot on Netflix. My first thought was nope, but ahhh, what the hell. Let’s watch it. K-Pop Demon Hunters.
Released 2025 on Netflix 100 minutes. Starring several top singers and actors (too long to list)
The premise is (not really a spoiler since the whole movie revolves around it) that a group of girls posing as a K-Pop group are really members of a long line of demon hunters that use sound and song to fight monsters.
But this time one of them is part demon and the others do not know, and they encounter a suspicious boy band.
The second non spoiler is that whatever plot ideas you got out of that description is exactly what you are gonna get.
The opening gave it some hope as it felt like a modern anime adventure. Demons, magic, fighting … For some reason I got flashes of High School Musical, Sailor Moon, and Teen Titans all mixed together.
The Anime has an odd feel. Mixing in old school facial animations with newer “graphics” that have a stop motion feel.
Something akin to the last Mutant Mayhem Turtles movie. And I kinda dig that
The music, which by the title you would think was going to be the center of attention, was actually pretty entertaining. Good enough for me to Google it to see if it was availible some where. But actually, it took a back seat in the story. And this story is one you have seen played out a hundred times over in Anime. There are no surprizes here.
Several times in the beginning, as things were setting up, I reached for the remote to eject. It was getting a bit too cheezy. But then things would get interesting enough for me to stick around.
All in all, K-Pop Demon Hunters is not an Anime masterpeice, but it is a fun mix of oldschool and modern art, in a new setting with a passable plot line that has a fairly solid soundtrack.
I liked it. Go check it out, and let me know what you think.
