Star Wars Skeleton Crew came out December/January. The Disney Star Wars series that was being billed as being more geared for a younger Star Wars crowd. But was it really?
Fresh off the heels of the Acolyte, Skeleton Crew had both a bit of hope and crazy backlash before it even hit the streams. And that is the way the modern Star Wars fandom seems to be. All ways hoping for great, but hating what ever it is, even if it is good or exactly what they wanted.
The premise of the show was something along the lines of a groip of “kids” that “accidentally” end up in space or on a ship and are being persued by space pirates. I will admit that this kinda had me a bit leary. Especially since I really went out of my way NOT to see any kind of trailers or spoilers. All I had was that set up.
And then the show aired. (Is that still the word to use? Maybe streamed?) And for the first half, or maybe even the first one and a half episodes I thought yea,,,no. Just like everyone else, all I could think of was,,,Goonies in space. But that’s not a bad thing, is it?
Things started to meld together. The story that seemed to be half arsed, became more interesting. The characters while REALLY having that Goonies feel, also became interesting (mostly).
Jude Law as Jod kept things just out of focus enough to stay mysterious and kept a direction pointed, but never quite knowing his he was a good guy or bad guy.
The kid “crew”, KB, Wim, Neel and Fern, did feel a bit forced at times, but all did manage to get enough focus to build a bit of character between them.
The overall ratio of cheesy situations really felt like a good ol’ Nickelodeon tween show. Pretty much on par for what was intended I guess.
And that was also true of the overall story. Pirates? Pirates acting in classic pirate tropes? On the spot invented characters to smooth over obviously poor planned plot points? Yep. But I was smiling and enjoying the show so much, I didn’t care! It was a good watch.
Skeleton Crew is one of those shows that is both good and crazy bad at the same time. Is it classic hard core Star Wars? No. Not even a little.
But is it a semi action, fun, side questing, enjoyable show set in the Star Wars element? Yes! Sorta like Lego Star Wars is to gaming.
So why was Skeleton Crew getting lambasted so bad in reviews? As I already said, No matter what this show, or any show from here on out is. Good, bad, great, terrible, the thing that makes the Tubers money is finding creative ways to fake hate it.
By now you can word for word know what their reviews are going to say before they release it.
Final verdict from me: Great? No.
Good? Yea, for what it was intended to be.
Do I want more Skeleton Crew? Yes, gladly.
Did it help Star Wars? I think so. All the kids that I know watched it and liked it, and getting new eyes is always good.
Its not crucial to the overall big picture and main story of Star wars… I don’t think, but its not hurting it.
