Starting The Whisperer in Darkness. Twice

I started listening to a new podcast yesterday. Its a BBC 4 release from several years ago, called The Whisperer in Darkness.

I was surprised to hear at the start of episode one, that it is a continuation of sorts of a podcast I talked about here a few weeks ago. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.

Not having read much… well any, of HP Lovecraft, this may be quite a known thing to many of you. And as such as the previous podcast did, this version of The Whisperer in Darkness is set in a more modern time where the original was set around the 1930’s.
And secondly with this podcast, it also quickly grabbed me and pulled me in
.
Its uses a “found footage”-ish style where reporters are stumbling on the whole situation but as it is happening and previously recorded bits , and you are following along as an observer as the pair of journalists investigate what they think is a missing man, who not only has left recorded audio evidence, but possibly having loose ties to the Dexter Ward case. The tension is quite effective.

Now because they are weaving in and talking about a particular “historical” location and events that have not happened yet when the originals were released, it becomes clear that this version ultimately has to be quite different from its source material.

So since I am just at the very beginning of this nine episode podcast, maybe I’ll take a look at the original.

I pulled up the trusty Kindle and there it is, The whisperer in Darkness by H.P. Lovecraft 1931. All 54 pages of it.
Wait,, what? Thats it? 54 pages? Ok. I gotta see how they manage to stretch out 54 pages into nine 30 min episodes.

Anyhow, that’s where I am right now. Getting it downloaded and set up. If nothing else, it probably fits in with Halloween. So with only 54 pages,I should have something posted up by then.

Stay tuned.
