I’m not exactly sure how I came across this Audio drama. I think there was a commercial for it on some other show I was listening to at the time.
So Solar is an Audiodrama by CurtCo Media. Staring Stephanie Beatriz Alan Cumming Helen Hunt and Jonathan Bangs.
One season so far,, with 12 main episodes and several in between episode shorts. Like one or two minutes each.
Going to assume if this was released weekly that these short clips would have been mid week filler like Limetown had. But those little shots are not listed in IMDB for some reason.
Set on a space station that is conducting experiments dealing with solar energy. Most of the story is after a catastrophe that cripples the ship and has two crew members left alive but separated in different parts of what’s left of the ship.
By the extensive use of the crews computer logs, we start to peice together not only the crews main mission, cause, extent and result of the accident, plus their “secret” mission. And even a bit of what may have happened after the main story ends.
Solar was at times pretty rivoting. The use of sound effects a spacial movement really let the intense parts be just that.
The bulk of the over arcing story is played out in a sometimes very jarring back and forth in time fashion. One of the main characters in the present is reviewing previously recorded data and ship logs.
That does make sense in the context of this shows story, But all those computer logs and messages were tough to keep track of just where or when they were happening.
I had to stop playback more than a few times to figure out just when some of these recordings were happening.
during the first couple episodes I gotta say that some of the voice acting was a bit rough. Bad might be a better word. But twards the end everyting seemed to come aound and became ok. And it had to be, in order for some of the emotional parts when things were counting down were happening.
Oh and just one note on one of the actors. I’ll let you figure which one,, but her tone, inflection and even wordage is soooo completely Kim Wexler, I had to stop and go see if it was Rhea Seehorn or not.
Overall I’ll give Solar a score of 7.5 out of 10. It kept things moving and interesting and really had some character growth in 12 episodes.
But on the same hand,, there was a bit over over playing some of the characters backstories for no real reason than to fill time. That took me out of focus quite a few times.
Solar. I found it on both Pocket Cast and Google Podcasts, but the official website is http://www.curtco.com/solar check it out.
