A few reviews of The Tomorrow War popped up in my feeds over the weekend. They weren’t exactly great either. But the trailers that were starting to show up looked ok. So I took a look.
Oh, Will try not to spoil, but I’m not promising anything here.
So the Tomorrow war starts with a group of military,, our military, popping out of a portal, or “jumplink” from the future to warn us of an alien invasion, and to try and recruit troops to help fight back the invaders because we are losing the war and the human race and entire planet is doomed.
The plot is certainly nothing new but it gets off to a good start. The world goes into chaos, but gets forces together and sent to the future.
The movie follows a particular group of new untrained draftees that are somewhat led by Chris Pratt, who did have a bit of prior training.
To be honest, right from the start this movie reminded me of a lot of Starship Troopers and Independence Day,,with a bunch of Nickelodeon mixed in with it.
I really wish it would have just picked one of those two styles and ran with it because it would flip back and forth from a semi serious feeling, to strange unconvincing over acted comedy making it hard to believe any of the characters.
To keep on with flip flopping we come to the main storyline. It really does crank along at a pretty good clip due to an in world hard timer. And that is good news because it works quite well to keep you from thinking about how much they decide to skip over.
If this plot moved even the slightest bit slower, you would have time to nit pick something out of nearly every scene.
Lots of leaps of faith to keep everything chugging along, and you really just have to go with it because the next thing is already happening.
The action is good and lots of it. The aliens seem a bit too familiar for some reason, but work good enough. Overall the CGI felt about a decade behind the pace, but much better than your SYFY special and not distracting.
Overall, if you combine all the good points, like pacing, story and action it’s a decent fun flick. But when its over, you catch yourself saying, wow, that felt long. And start thinking about the plot holes and those nit picks you didn’t have time for.
Not a blockbuster by any criteria, but I’d say watch it. Its fine, just don’t think too much about it.
Timelapsed.
