So we made it to the season finale of Lower Decks. In the first 10 minutes of the series, I wasn’t even sure I would make it through the first episode. But I did,, so what do I think now?
Well it took a bit to get used of the constant constant constant fan boy call backs. Every episode felt like the writers were paid by how many references to past shows the put in.
And it was distracting. But somewhere I started to look past them a little and started to see how they were building on old cannon.
I don’t like the technique,, but it did work.
The stories themselves good and went back to the semi episodic style with a over arcing direction. Meaning we have a specific direction.. but feels like new stuff every week.
It’s didn’t feel like crew member of the week so it wasn’t as jarring as some of the newer Trek stuff. Everything flowed together nicely and took it’s time. Unlike discovery and especially Picard where it feels so rushed you always think you missed something.
One thing that may be jarring to some new comers is some of it’s somewhat graphic scenes. The show tended to show it’s self off in a light-hearted comedy.. and alot of it is.
However sprinkled in are some fairly hardcore things that may not sit well with some. Especially if a parent would walk in expecting muppet babies,, but see a bunch of people getting arms and heads ripped off.
But on the same note. Perhaps some people see the animation and consider it for kids and just skipped it all together. I think we need to get this group of people back to watch at least one episode. (Maybe not ep1 tho. That one might have put a few people off)
All in all, I was not sure at first, but even as soon as episode 2 it came around with what felt like TOS moral of the story stuff and kept on going.
I would recommend taking a look if the animation set you back. It’s pretty solid. Just,, look past the fanboy stuff.. the good stuff is in there.
