Through the Ring Gates

S4E1- New Terra

I finally got a chance to catch the first episode of season 4. Man, it sure was a long wait. And wasn’t sure what to expect now that Amazon is at the controls. But it did not feel far off from the SyFy version.
As far as aesthetics, the style and feel of everything looks the same. I was really hoping they didn’t change any video settings because that was one of the things that really made this series feel so right. No major changes to the sets that jumped out at me, other than the Rocinante looks fresh and clean,, but they do clear that up in story.

Since they are not sporting commercials like SyFy I was hoping they would be running the full time length, but they are still holding at the 45 minute-ish mark. But would assume that they will be flexible to story needs with this.
Moving to the episode itself, the title New Terra basically explains what we expect would happen when warring factions are given new territories.
We spend some time in the beginning re-introducing the main players, and you know what? It felt like I needed that after such a long break, and its gonna help viewers on this new platform get adjusted.
But it didn’t take long for the plot to start moving forward. And immediately the different factions fall back into their opposing strategies and political moves. The Belters are trying to claim mining sectors and refugees are trying to flee and set up colonies, while the Governments from each are trying to keep things in check to avoid the inevitable “gold rush” type wars.

During this whole thing, news that more Proto Molecules are still being detected on the Belter settlement, and the UN sends the Rocinante and crew to check it out. You can imagine how the Belters there feel about that.
Tensions are high everywhere. The settlements, the ring defenses.. There are explorers, pirates and scientists all trying to reach these new places first, while the UN and OPA is trying to keep some kind of order. But things are quickly escalating.
It was a great episode that really set the tone and plot for the season and started us down a couple of plot lines, while at the same time showing how big of a budget they have.
If the rest of the season follows suit, it looks like we are in for something great.
